Summer Happenings

Westfinder is not doing well. No Bootlegs, no Capture-the-Flag, not even any blog posts anymore. Not for long, though. First of all, I'm going to give an account of events since the last post:

We had a staff meeting, in which we discussed a number of issues:
-Pricing, and ways to decrease it efficiently.
-The systemization of production and costuming.
-Future staff applications and what Staff-in-Training would do.

Reed, Greg, Sam and I met with Jill Eckmann, a possible Regional Coordinator. Her resume is teeming with leadership, theater, and even therapeutic experience. We deemed her to be fit for the position, and directed her to Wayfinder.

We had another meeting, this time discussing what it means to be staff, and what we should be doing. It was a very inspiring meeting, but we didn't live up to what we said at it. Not yet, anyway. See this blog post? I meant to finish it about a week ago.

A call to Wayfinder has revealed that they just need to get together the insurance details of Westfinder becoming a satellite.

The good news, however, seems to be that the only things keeping Westfinder down are a lack of staffly initiative (which we'll get rid of, I promise!) and some bureaucratic shenanigans.

As always, be sure to ask any questions you have about what's going on.

  1. The staffly initiative is rolling up steam as we speak, though! Get ready for some serious actionsstaff, westfinder!

And we should know in the next day or so the outcome of, and our proper response to, the beaurocratic shenanigans!

All in all, get ready for a kick-ass third season!

  3. i personally think that getting CTF going before the first bootleg would be a good idea. it would give people the opportunity to both re-bond with people they may not have seen in a while and get back into the swing of westfinding.

  4. I believe the entire community (or as much of it as wants too) should be involved in many of these major decisions, especially that of who the Regional Coordinator'll be, preferably by vote. If you all disagree that the community should have this decision-making power, then we should at least get to discuss it. Perhaps you guys' interviews will narrow down the list of applicants, and then a community meeting could be held for the final decision.
If I may offer my general opinion in this matter, as well, I'd like to say that part of what makes (has made?) Westfinder and (to a point) Wayfinder great is the lack of a big opaque wall between staff and the rest of the community. A bit of organization is great, a bit of businesslikeness fine, but when it starts building a hierarchy, there's a serious problem. To put it a different way, the staff are like SPCs, where the S, as always, stands for "serving". You're the people who do the behind-the-scenes work so we don't have to. Just like SPCs, your job is to make sure the community has as good an experience as possible. To this end, I propose that you keep the community involved as much as possible in determining Westfinder's direction along its path to glory.

  5. Seems to me that the big hold back is the bureaucratic part, most likely. Sounds like that's moving right along, and once that's finished we can start up again! I agree that it'd be best for CTF to start before the bootleg, but I don't think it necessarily warrants moving the bootleg if the timing doesn't match up. That might caust more scheduling problems than it's worth.

  6. I'm very sorry to say it, Jonathan, but that isn't really how things can work, in regards to selecting the regional coordinator, for several reasons. One, is that we aren't the ones selecting them. Westfinder staff has found all the applicants so far, and interviewed them, and has a certain sort of veto power, but it is wayfinder who is going to be hiring the regional coordinator, as the regco is, in fact, an employee of wayfinder.

There are many things that westfinder staff will be consulting the community on, such as when we were discussing the idea of the tavernights. We will also have many other opportunities for community involvement in the decision making progress, so don't worry. However, the selection of the regco can't really be one of those times.
