Friday Night Tavern Scenes?

Hey guys! An idea that some of the other staff and I have been bandying about due to the sheer volume of game submissions we've gotten is Friday Night Tavern Scenes. We got WAY more submissions than we can run, and a ton of them are incredibly cool. So the idea runs thusly:

--Cut back the number of full-scale Bootlegs to, say, seven, and space them out slightly more.
--In times when there's a larger gap between Bootlegs, have a Friday Night Tavern Scene!
--These would be considerably lower-key affairs, and much more community-oriented than our usual events.
--They'd be on a Friday evening, when people aren't generally doing anything, though they coudl be on Saturdays if people preferred.
--We could charge less for them ($10?) and have them be a good ground-level event recommended for first-time players.
--Pot-luck style dinners?
--We could have a Bardic Circle after the game was over, in the same location as the game!

What do people think? Do you like this idea? Have ways we could make it even cooler? Think it's silly, and we should focus more on our big epic games? Should we incorporate them into this season's schedule? Some variation there on? Tell us your thoughts!

  1. The idea of the tavern scenes sounds like lots of fun, but if it meant cutting down on number of bootlegs during the season, I'd be more for the bootlegs than tavern scenes.

  2. it sounds like a really cool idea. however, there are a couple of problems for me:
    1) i'm not sure how many of the games submitted could be run as tavern scenes.
    2) i personally happen to prefer the large-scale all-day events provided by bootlegs for community stuff and CTF for running around and swordfighting
    3) tavern scenes might be a good way for people to keep their improv skills sharp during the summer months; they don't need as many people or as much preparation.
    4) i haven't been to a CTF in a while, but what would be really cool (if it hasn't been happening) would be to have more adventure-the-flags, which I, for one, really enjoy. maybe some of the gamewriters who had their submissions rejected can modify them to be run easily at a CTF.

  4. Actually, David, a lot of the submitted games are specifically tavern scenes! Which is part of what gave us this idea!

And yeah, we realize, Benj. We're working on ways to make stuff more affordable--having these as affordable alternatives is one way, and one thing we've done in the past for potluck events is had you be able to get a discount for bringing food! Plausibly even have it cover your entire fee. That way we're guaranteed either enough food for everyone or money to buy more!

  5. But upon hearing part 2, I fully support the idea of the same 9 bootlegs with tavern scenes cheaper.

  6. And yeah, thanks Ben. Makes sense. :)

  7. i like the second idea, but what do you guys think about my other idea (run at least a couple of tavern scenes during the summer when people aren't off at wayfinder)

  8. I agree with David, both that the second idea (with all 9 bootlegs) is better and about doing some things during the summer. I must say though, I like the idea of having things on Friday nights, because I don't often have time on weekends during the school year to commit a full day to WSF. Can we have our cake and eat it too (i.e. do all 9 bootlegs AND have regular tavern scenes)?

Also, why don't we run bootlegs in the summer? I know some people go to Wayfinder, but isn't that only for a couple of weeks out of a three-month-long summer? I think that most people actually have *more* time for Westfinder during the summer because there's no school. Even with some people on vacations, I think the number of other available Westfinders will more than make up for them--there are a *lot* more westfinders than the number that come to a normal bootleg. Can't we find time to run even a single bootleg this summer?

  9. We were originally planning to continue to run events through the summer, however, Wayfinder has asked us to hold off on things like that until we have found a suitable Regional Coordinator. As soon as we do, we're back in business, baby!

  10. just clarifying: by events, this includes CTF? so was community day the last westfinder anything until we get a regco?

  11. As I understand it, we can run pretty much anything that doesn't involve payment or combat. So we could (and probably will) have another Community Day.

  12. well, we don't know that for sure.
We got permission to run the community day on the conditions that there be no payment and no combat. However, we certainly didn't get anything like a blanket allowance to run such events. So, yeah, consider the community day the last event until we get a RegCo. If we can run more, we will, but until we find one, its very likely we won't.

  13. I like the idea of keeping the same number of awesome bootlegs and adding in bonus tavern scenes. I don't want to cut back on bootlegs, they're really fun.

  14. I like the second idea (9 full games is good). The idea of cutting things down, and running a lot of the tavern scenes as SMALLER events doesn't appeal to be. I'll admit to a certain bias as the author of two tavern scene submissions, because the way the e-mail put it, it sounds to me like the Friday Night scenes would be much smaller, and less epic. That feels unfair to the people who put in just as much work on a tavern scene as someone else did on a bootleg, and have their work made smaller.

Also, much as I love Bardic Circles, they take a LOT of time (everyone is so creative, and has so much to share). If we add them to Friday Night events, I think that if people have commitments on Saturday morning, they'll have to cut out early and miss part of the event.
