Here's an update of our financial situation, and what we're hoping to do with that money within the next year:
Total munnies: ~$635
This will (hopefully) go towards...
--A satellite phone
--More costuming, including rented costumes
--A place to store all costuming/equipment
--Creating real sets!
--Finding a warehouse/urban location to play more urban games
--Paying the Regco (only after we've sustained ourselves so that we can do so easily. Until that happens, Wayfinder will pay.)
-- Getting more spirit costumes
These are the things we have been brainstorming thus fair, but if you guys have any brilliant ideas like usual, please let us know.

Mkay. So first thing, I really wanna say how glad I am you're putting this up and asking us this, even if I personally have no ideas at the moment.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, this post reminded me of something. I've been meaning to tell you that if there's something I can do, or can easily learn to do that needs doing for Westfinder, I'd be happy to do it. Moreover, I bet you there are a bunch of Westfinders who would, if given a list of things that need doing, would happily volunteer to do it, which would take some burden off staff. I've noticed a few times when, say, not all the weapons are done, costuming isn't all in one place, the site isn't reserved etc, and I take that as a sign that staff is trying to do more than they can handle. So why not let us do some of it? We've got plenty of foamsmiths, people with free time, and people who just plain wanna help, but we aren't taking advantage of that. Maybe just post the list here, have people comment to volunteer. It would be easy, and even if I'm wrong and no one would want to, we'd be no worse off then we were.
Rio, we're actually *just* finalizing how we're going to implement that exact idea. It will be common practice next season, promise!

ReplyDeleteThank you for finally getting this up.

I have to ask, however, what happened to the large amount of money earned from Nolix%Uul, and the ~$1,000 earned from Wizard's Wager less than two weeks ago?
Um, the 've' is a typo.
ReplyDeleteActually, we made about half that from WW, due to a few reasons. One, paying staff. This was a big game, and required more staff work than usual.
ReplyDeleteTwo, we usually put a bit of the day's money towards getting food, alongside the money people give us for it. This is what lets us feed people as well as we can.
three. As near as I could tell ( I did the money collecting and counting at site), about 10 people didn't pay us, because we wound up with, before paying staff and putting money towards food, just a little over 700$ while we still had 50+ people there who weren't staff, and thusly should have been paying.
Its not a big concern, right now that that happened, but it might become so in the future, so please, do pay us, its what lets us keep running things and expand!
some notes
ReplyDeletewhen we talk about building actual sets, what exactly does this mean? what scale are we building this kind of thing on, and do you need people with experience in carpentry? (i have some)
i heartily approve of a sat-phone. maybe also set up an official "Westfinder" phone-line.
i also approve of the warehouse/urban-environments idea. would we be renting the space for specific games, or doing something else with that?
Thanks for the explanation, Reed.
ReplyDeleteIn the future, are we going to be charging more for food, then? Because the money set aside for Westfinder shouldn't be paying for food, that's why there's specific money for food.
Generally when we put extra money in from the main supply to the food supply, it's to account for the fact that usually five or six people show up wanting lunch after I've already left to go get pizza, so that money is covering for them in advance, and gets recouped in their lunch money.
ReplyDeleteAlso, David, we don't have set plans for sets just yet, but it'll probably be more like small props and decorations that are very portable, reusable, and can be used in various different locations to make them look a lot cooler. And yeah, we've got a lot of urban games submitted this year, so the idea would be to rent urban spaces to play in for some games.

what kind of urban spaces are we talking about? you generally can't rent a warehouse for an afternoon (I think).
ReplyDeleteother notes: does any of this mean that fees in general will be going up for either bootlegs or CTF?
Something I mentioned to Hillary: Since 635 is a lot of money, rather than keeping it all in cash, it seems prudent to put it in some sort of account (where it may even gain some small interest in today's poor economy, though I think rates are about at .05%, which is... not really worth mentioning). Still, for security reasons, a bank seems like a good idea...
ReplyDeleteGAAAH! Benj wins for stating the TOTALLY should-have-been-obvious-to-the-rest-of-us.
ReplyDeleteWe should use the sign-in, sign-out sheet to record payment, too.
ReplyDeleteyet more WE SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS EARLIER
ReplyDeleteWe were actually in the process of setting up an account when the whole bingbang with wfe happened over the winter, so those plans got temporarily put aside. as well, once the deal with getting a regco goes through, we will be beggining to out our funds in an account set up as a part of wfe, to save us the hassle of setting one up. Leastways, that's how I remember it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we did use the sign-in sheet to record payment! So we should actually have an accounting of who didn't pay, in theory.
